“We both grew up in a small town in southwestern Ontario and met in high school through various media projects, the most notable being our school’s show on Rogers TV. Whitney was the founder and producer of the show, and when she left for university, Maysee took over. Fast forward to the fall of 2019, we were both studying in the media production program at Ryerson University. We were aware that we could have our own radio show at Ryerson - all we had to do was fill out an application and wait for a possible interview. Maysee’s mom then suggested the idea of a show featuring a successful woman every week. We both loved the idea and decided on the name Power in Heels. It was hard at first when reaching out to potential guests because nobody knew who we were and had never heard of the show. We had just moved to a new city and didn’t have many connections, either. But after a lot of hard work and help from others who believed in us, we managed to convince our first few guests to appear on the show. From there, our guests then began referring us to their friends and colleagues and we started to book more interviews. It wasn’t easy. For every single yes we got, we had an endless amount of no’s! But it was important that we learned from those no’s and kept trying. We have so far completed two seasons of the show, which airs on the school’s radio station, and have interviewed so many inspiring women who are trailblazers in their lives and careers. Through the show, we uncover our guests’ secrets to success, but our main goal is to inspire and motivate our listeners and give them the tools they need to excel in any given field. Sometimes some dreams seem too big but if you don’t try, you’ll never know what your true potential is. We can’t wait to see what the future holds.” Maysee McLean and Whitney Keunen, Student Leaders
